Harold “Smitty” Leroy Smith, 91 of Pittsboro, Indiana, passed away peacefully, July 27, 2024, in Life's Journey Hospice.
Smitty was born on March 17, 1933, at home in Pittsboro, to Cecil E. and Dorothy (Marker) Smith. He met Eleanor “Jane” (Blanton) Smith, and they began their 70-year commitment to one another when they began going steady together in March of 1949. On January 16, 1952, they were married in Jane’s parent’s home, a loving union that would last the next 67 years until her passing in 2019.
Smitty graduated from Pittsboro High School in the class of 1951 and was a lifelong farmer. He retired as manager of the Crystal Flash Fuel Depot and was also a beloved school bus driver for many years. Having a natural gift for tending to landscape, Smitty enjoyed caring for his garden and was happy to mow the lawn.
Survivors include his beloved daughters, Karen (Husband Roger) Love, Sharon Austin, Peggy Vela, Debbie (husband Tom) Noyes, and Janet Smith; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and beloved wife, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Mike Austin.
Funeral Services will be held at 1pm, Tuesday, July 30, 2024, in Eric MD Bell Funeral Home, where friends and family will gather from 11 am until the time of the service. He will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife Jane, in the Sparks Cemetery following the funeral.
All are encouraged to keep the Smith family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
