Inge B. Hawthorne, 69, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2019,surrounded by family at their home in Pittsboro, Indiana. Inge was born on October 8, 1949, in Estenfeld, Germany, to Karl and Maria (Bouzek) Krieglstein.
Inge persevered through a difficult childhood in postwar Germany. Her mother, Maria, died unexpectedly of kidney disease when Inge was only 14 years old. Inge took on the role of caretaker for her father and two brothers while also attending grade school and a taking a stenography course in Germany.
In 1970, Inge immigrated to the United States. She learned the English language while putting herself through college and nursing school. She graduated with a nursing degree from Midway College in Midway, Kentucky, in 1983.
Inge worked at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky,where she met her husband of 14 years, Barry Hawthorne. They moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where she gave birth to their only daughter, Katharine (Katie). The family relocated to Concord, North Carolina, where Inge worked as a Cardiac Nurse at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte for 24 years, retiring in 2015.
Inge moved to Lexington, Kentucky, to spend her retirement with friends and family nearby. She enjoyed gardening, reading, sewing and knitting, classical music, travel, and time with her pets, close friends and family, especially her grandchildren.
Inge is preceded in death by her parents, Karl and Maria, and her brothers Roland and Günter. She is survived by her daughter, Katie Roberts (Steve) and her grandchildren, Lily Kate (4), Beau Carter (1), and another granddaughter expected in June of 2019.
Inge’s family will hold a memorial service and Celebration of her Life, at their family home on March 23, 2019.
Inge will be remembered as a hard-worker, a devoted mother and “Oma,” and as a loyal friend.
Memorial and professional care has been entrusted to funeral director, Eric Bell.
