John L. Armstrong, 70 of Brownsburg, passed away in his home, November 4, 2017, surrounded by his devoted and loving family.

John was born December 9, 1946 in Indianapolis, IN to Harry Hanson and Rosemary (Wills) Armstrong. Following his 1965 graduation from Howe High School, he faithfully served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

Following his service in the Army, John continued his life of service to others by becoming a Professional Firefighter with the Indianapolis Fire Department. He rose to the rank of Corporal prior to his retirement from IFD in 1998.  After his retirement from IFD, he worked for Federal Express. John was a passionate wood-worker but his greatest joy was caring for his large and loving family.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 21 years, Maria Armstrong; children, Angie (Jim) Burgess, Bradley (Julie) Armstrong, Emily (Andy) Hutcherson, Molly (James) Armstrong, Andrew (Brianna) Hodge; siblings, Diana (Bill) Allen, Cindy (Sylvester) Truitt, David (Dawn) Armstrong, sister-in-law, Dona Armstrong; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his children, Laura Terry and Christopher Hodge, and siblings, Bob, Mike and Kathy Armstrong.

Friends and family will gather from 4pm until 8pm, Wednesday, November 8 at The Church@Main 1500 E Main St, Brownsburg, IN 46112. Funeral Services with Military and Firefighter Honors will be at 11am, Thursday, November 9 at the Church. Private Cremation Inurment will occur at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, in keeping with John’s passion for the care of children, the Armstrong family respectfully requests that memorial gifts be made to the Indianapolis Firefighter’s fund for children.
