John Scott

John Freeman Scott (“Pappy”), 91, of Brownsburg, Indiana, died peacefully in his sleep July 7, 2021, at Brownsburg Healthcare Center.

John was born January 21, 1930, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Fred Thomas and Vola May (White) Scott of Tompkinsville, Kentucky.

At three weeks of age, he traveled with his mother back to his father's farm in Tompkinsville, where he lived the remainder of his childhood years. His mother died when he was only five years old. He attended school at Slickrock, Seedtick, and Old Mt. Herman schools, quitting after 7½  years.

He was drafted into the US Army in 1953, serving at Ft. Bragg and Trieste, Italy. He returned to the US in late 1954 where he was honorably discharged. He went home to Tompkinsville and helped build the local LDS church building.

In 1955, he moved to Indianapolis and went to work for Western Electric. After 11 years, he went to work in the service station business, becoming an automobile mechanic, a profession he remained in until retiring in 1992. He met and later married Betty Ann (Walter) in July 1964 and started a family. The family moved to rural Noblesville in 1977. He lived briefly in Michigan and Colorado later in life before returning to the Indianapolis area in 2019.

He was a lifelong devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, always willing to share his faith and committing countless hours of volunteer time to the Church. He enjoyed taking home movies and photos, and excelled at repairing and building almost anything. He was a man incapable of hate and generous to a fault. Generally a quiet, stoic man, he would openly weep during sad parts of movies or television programs.

John is survived by his children Steven, Shanna, Samuel and his wife Yanai Kativu, Steward and his wife Danielle Goodman-Scott, and child-by-choice Susan Burt; 11 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, some by birth and all by choice; brother Lawrence and sister Mary Jewell Cordingley.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ann (Walter); his son, Shawn; one grandchild; two brothers, Elmer and Ervin; and his parents.

Friends and family will gather at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Brownsburg, Indiana on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 from 4 pm until the time of the service at 6 pm.  On Saturday, July 17, 2021, friends and family will gather in John's hometown of Tompkinsville, Kentucky at the Tompkinsville Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, from 4 pm until the time of the service at 6 pm.  John will be laid to rest following this service in The Scott Family Cemetery.
