Memories from Leroy’s family.
Leroy Smith was born in Kempton, Indiana on September 10, 1943 to Hubert and Pearl Smith. He was the second oldest, brother to Jesse, Mary, and Hubert Junior. They all graduated from North Salem School.
Growing up, Leroy worked for Ma Moose. It was here he discovered his love of cooking and food. He also worked for his family’s dairy farm. He’d often enjoy a fresh glass of milk straight from the cow.
On July 1, 1967 Leroy married his wife of 54 years, Suzie Eggers. It was hotter than blue blazes with no air conditioning. On their one year anniversary when they pulled out the top tier of their cake they hadn’t realized it had been invaded by gnats and inedible.
They had two children, Leroy II and Suzanne. They were his greatest achievement. As early as Leroy II can remember, he rode side by side with his father until the day he began to drive side by side. Their successful partnership continued throughout the years up until their last trip to Missouri in September of 2021. Suzanne will always cherish the memory of telling her dad she’d like to live by the ocean. He told her “well I think you’d get awfully tired of looking at the ocean everyday.”
Leroy bought his first truck in 1969. It was a red B Model Mack. It didn’t take long for him to discover Mack wasn’t for him. He’d often tell people that if you didn’t drive a Peterbilt, you didn't drive a truck. He always loved driving and found a lot of joy in taking anyone and everyone for a ride.
For 52 years Leroy was a successful owner and operator of Smith Trucking, located in North Salem, Indiana.
He was an exceptional man of integrity. He was a loving husband, a dedicated father, grandfather and an inspirational friend. This has been a tragic loss, but Leroy will be forever in our hearts. We will honor him by sharing our favorite memories, cooking his sacred recipes, working hard, and cherishing the things we love most.
He is survived by his wife, siblings, kids, and grandkids, Sue, Hubert Jr, Mary, Leroy II (Amanda, Tyler, Taylor), Suzanne (Kenneth, Kenya, Kamren).
