Mary Ann O'Brien

Mary Ann O’Brien, 77 of Indianapolis, Indiana, peacefully passed away on August 16, 2021.  Mary Ann was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Most of all, she was a devout Catholic who loved Jesus Christ. The second of five children, Mary Ann was born in 1943 in Henderson, Kentucky to William and Mary Catherine Clark. To her brothers, Bill, Jim, and Joe Clark and her sister, Charlotte White, she was known for her spunky nature and fun sense of adventure. She attended St Agnes Catholic High School and graduated from Our Lady of Grace High School in 1961. She caught the eye of Jim O’Brien, a college student, as a 16-year-old beauty. After a 3-year courtship, Jim O’Brien (Obie) and Mary Ann married in 1963 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church.

After having four children in four years, she dedicated 15 years to being a wife and mother then became a LPN in 1978. While rearing her children and working, she went on to graduate first in her R.N. program at IUPUI in 1983 and worked at St. Vincent Hospital in Labor and Delivery for 30 years until her retirement. After retirement, she dedicated herself to supporting her husband, children, and grandchildren and in service to God as a daily communicant and devoted adorer of the Blessed Sacrament.

Mary Ann had an infectious laugh. She was a good conversationalist who never met a stranger. She had high standards for herself and others but always extended kindness and mercy to all. Her children and spouses, Dan and Julane O’Brien, Julie Porter, Greg O’Brien, and Jeff and Terri Drake are forever grateful for Mary Ann’s generosity, prayers, cheerful encouragement, good example, and love given to them and to her seventeen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Friends and family will gather at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, for visitation from 11 am until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 12 pm.  Following the Mass of Christian Burial, inurnment will take place at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery.
