Ronald David Shirrell, 82, of Indianapolis, formerly of Pittsboro, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2019 at his home with family surrounding him.
Ronald was born on January 3, 1937 in Paducah, KY to John Shirrell and Pearl (Burger) Shirrell. He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis and married Carol (Stewart) Shirrell in 1959, who preceded him in death in 2002. Together they had four children, Rhonda (Curt) Wiles, Marcy (Larry) Mathew, Shannon (Keith) Miller, and Dennis (Dana) Shirrell. They were blessed with nine grandchildren, Amber Mathew Klauber, Heather (Clay) McCoy, Mo (Lindsey) Mathew, Zac (Erin) Wiles, Hillary Wiles, Cory Miller, Kaylee Shirrell, Krystal Shirrell, and Samme Miller. Their great-grandchildren include Peyton and Hudson Klauber, Reese, Beau and Everly Wiles, Carter and Luke Mathew and Norah Miller.
Throughout his life, he was an avid sports fan and enjoyed coaching his children’s sports teams for many years. He was a co-founder of the Tri West Youth Football League and was instrumental in the forming of a girls’ softball league in the same area. After all, he had three daughters. Ronald worked for Allison’s Transmissions in Speedway for over 35 years. He loved cutting grass, growing trees, visiting the casino with his friends, and sharing the bounty from his garden. If you needed a tool, chances were good he had one in his barn. When he moved to Robin Run Village, he could be seen taking his neighbors on rides on his impressive golf cart. He loved sharinghis collection of collectible cars and sports memorabilia in his man cave. He was a simple man who always put his family first and he passed this mindset down to his children and grandchildren.
In addition to Ronald’s parents and his wife, he is preceded in death by his brothers Clarence and Robert Shirrell, and his sister, Verna Jeanne Reddick.
His family would like to thank the caregivers for their support during this time: Allisah, Victoria, Hyacinth, and Diane. Also at this time, all who were honored to know Ron should recall his humor, his love for his family, and his inspiring fighting spirit. Most of all, we must all remember we are a part of his greatest memories and for his family, his legacy.
Donations are welcome in his memory to the Shirrell Family Legacy Fund benefiting area non-profits and community projects at the Hendricks County Community Foundation at 6319 E US Hwy 36 Suite 211, Avon, IN 46123. Currently the Lilly Foundation will match $2 for every $1 donated.
